PAYING IT FORWARD

PARALYZED DOG SET TO BE EUTHANIZED- RESCUED!  NOW SHE’S THE GUARDIAN FOR HER PARAPLEGIC NEW OWNER.

Just a year ago, we received an urgent call from our groomer Abe Munguia, who is also a vet -tech.  A paralyzed four-year-old little dog had been brought into the vet hospital where he worked to be euthanized. She was filthy with an ulcerated bottom and vagina, that were covered by a soaking wet diaper.  She had been unable to walk for over a year, and her owner, an elderly woman, with little money, could not afford vet care. She asked that the badly matted dog, reeking of urine, be put to sleep. Once Abe told us that Cinnamon- that was her name- had no time left to live, we immediately agreed to save her and had her owner relinquish her to us. After shaving, bathing, and treating and cleaning her wounds, Abe delivered her to us that night. Despite her discomfort, Cinnamon was spunky and ready for a new beginning!

After extensive vet care, grooming, and lots of good food, Cinnamon was already in much better shape in a mere two weeks. We were hopeful that we might be able to get her to walk again, but sadly after examining her, our neurologist said it was too late. Too much time had passed since her initial injury. (What happened to cause her to be paralyzed was never divulged by her prior owner).

We prayed someone wonderful would come along who would want this sweet, dainty, special-needs dog, and that miracle arrived soon after in the form of Janet Simonec, who came to meet Cinnamon at our foster’s house, and fell in love instantly!

Janet, a warm and remarkable woman, truly understood what taking care of someone involved – her own husband Tim, a well-known composer and conductor, had been a paraplegic for many years, and she was his primary caregiver. “My friends said there are so many dogs to save and why did I want a paralyzed one?” Janet laughed, but of course, the Universe knew that there was a greater plan for Cinnamon and her new owners.

Now, many months later, Cinnamon has become both the watchdog for Tim, Janet tells us.

“She’s doing well. She is our love. Tim had a rough summer health-wise and she’s become his therapy dog!! She’s warns me when he tries to get up from his chair.”

Janet also added:

“Cinnamon’s particularly attuned to Tim during the night. She sleeps very soundly in bed next to me, but if Tim calls for me or coughs or clears his throat, she’s alert and barks to wake me and won’t rest until I check on him. It’s been really helpful when I fall asleep so soundly after a day of caregiving!! As my pet intuitive therapist told me…she’s so appreciative of her new home that it’s like she’s paying it forward!!! She’s been such a gift to us. “

We are very grateful to have been a part of the incredible journey that brought this paralyzed pup into the lives of the people who needed her to be on this planet most of all – her owners, Tim and Janet.
